From South Africa, a Commemoration of the Siege of Mafeking Engraved on the Reverse of a British Queen Victoria Halfcrown. The engraved date 17.5.1900 was the date on which the town was relieved. The initials: "I.C." probably stand for Imperial Cavalry. Locally made. Silver. Diameter 34.2 mm. Mass 16.0 gm. The coins has been mounted inside bezel ring with riveted attachment for a boss. Notes:Mafeking was a small garrison town in the northern part of the Cape Colony close to the border of Bechuanaland (now Botswana). It was besieged by Boer Forces over 217 days, from 13 October 1899 to 17 May 1900. The Siege was lifted flying column of some 2, 000 British soldiers.
