Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Lucy Cooper - 1852. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section is stitched with a central folly building with a bird on top. The building is then flanked by a floral motif and carnation basket each with two hearts above. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit b...asket which has a floral motif and heart to its left and right. The fruit basket is sitting on a plaque which has a floral motif at each end and contains Lucy's name and the date of February 17 1852. The plaque has a tree on each side then the whole piece is surrounded by a Greek key border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a very small dark mark above the 1 of the numbers, and the colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Lucy first stitched it.Measures 11 3/4" x 15 1/2" I AM ALSO SELLING TWO OTHERS SAMPLERS WHICH I ACQUIRED AT THE SAME TIME AS LUCY'S. THEY ARE BY ELIZABETH ANN AND CATHRINE COOPER. ALL THREE SAMPLERS ARE SIMILAR AND FINISHED AROUND THE SAME TIME SO I THINK IT IS LIKELY THE GIRLS WERE SISTERS. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
