MID 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & V ERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH ANN COOPER - C. 1850
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:9256 |
With humble heart and tongueMy God to thee I prayO make me learn while I am youngThat I may keep my ways
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a further plaque which contains Elizabeth Ann's name and the beginnings of the date she finished her sampler. There is a flower basket above the plaque which has floral motifs on each side, whilst the plaque itself has a tree, flowers and a heart to its left and right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a small dark smudge above the word humble in the verse. There is also a light crease running down the centre. The colours of the thread are good with some minor bleeding to the words in the name plaque. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth Ann first stitched it.Measures 15 1/4" x 16 1/2"
AS MENTIONED EARLIER, I AM ALSO SELLING TWO OTHERS SAMPLERS WHICH I ACQUIRED AT THE SAME TIME AS ELIZABETH ANN'S. THEY ARE BY CATHRINE AND LUCY LUCY COOPER AND FINISHED IN 1851 & 1852. ALL THREE SAMPLERS ARE SIMILAR AND FINISHED AROUND THE SAME TIME SO I THINK IT IS LIKELY THE GIRLS WERE SISTERS.
