The blade is... a Takayamato, a type of sword made famous by the war-time martial arts leader TakayamaMasayoshi. The blade is in Very Goodcondition and the mountings are in Excellentcondition. The sword is a katana and has a blade length of 25.5 inches (65 cm).The blade features both a long tang and stout kissaki, characteristics theseswords were known for. The blade is well constructed and the hada is a tightwood grain itame hada. The hamon is anundulating notare hamon. The hamon ispresent the length of the blade ending in a maruboshi.The tang is signed KinsakuTakayamato Tosho Ishihara Masanao Kenshi Ishitsune. This translates to arespectfully made Takayamato, made by Masanao, polished by Ishitsune. Takayamatowere a type of sword developed during the war-era by the Navy Col. TakayamaMasayoshi who also developed a martial arts school for test cutting. He developedthis type of sword for usage by the Navy but they were also commonly used byhis students and other practitioners of tameshigiri, or cutting.The mountings are Civilian-styled war time samurai mountsthat are in Excellentcondition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with customized menuki and a veryrare shape used by Takayama’s adherents. There is little to no fraying. Thetsuba is iron with three accompanying seppa. The saya (scabbard) is black lacqueredwood and in Excellent condition, showing some scratches and a few small areas of missing finish. It retainsroughly 90-95% of original finish.The blade is in Very Goodcondition. There is one small nick that is wide, but shallow in the monouchi, followed by a few very small micro nicks. There are a couple small spots ofrust and some scratches along its length. There are no major flaws like hagire.Given the desirability of Takayamato, I think this sword would be a superb addition for a collector of WW2 militaria orJapanese swords.Terms andadditional items: This item is original and not a fake.
