This antique Chinese cinnabar silk colorful forbidden stitch embroidered butterfly robe dates from the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. It is made of a cinnabar orange color silk damask weave fabric with a woven floral pattern design, colorful raised padded satin stitch ...and forbidden stitch Peking knot hand embroidery work of butterflies, pumpkins, peony flowers which represent fertility, birth and young love. There are yellow silk fabric sleeve band cuffs with colorful forbidden stitch hand embroidered variety of flowers and vases outlined in gold thread couching work. This beautiful butterfly robe has a long surcoat style, is loose fitting, with long full flared wide sleeves, black silk blue embroidered butterfly flower trim edging, collar, side vents, black silk knotted toggle closures down the front and is fully lined in a blue silk fabric. The robe measures 41 inches long, with a 48 inch chest, 48 inch waist and 13 inch wide sleeve cuffs. It is in good condition, with some slight faint fade discoloration, a few faint small water spot stains and a small frayed area of trim edging on the bottom and inside silk lining. This is truly a wonderful piece of Chinese wearable art!
