Measuring 13.5" x 11.5" and 16" x 14" including its later but sympathetic frame, this is a fine American needlework sampler, worked by 'Susanna Webber Offen Aged 9 Years, 1815'. When I bought it, the frame it was in fell apart and revealed that at some point it was stitched to the back of a card with two circa 1870 photos, inscribed 'Hough Cottage Cass City Michigan' (I have preserved these on the back). My research has found ...that Susanna Webber Offen was born in 1806 in Kentucky and lived there until her death in 1874. She was married to John Maxted in 1831, and they had one son; Henry George Maxsted. According to the census her mother is unknown but her father is Henry Grayling Offen (1765-1831). I'm speculating but it is likely that a later family member living in Cass CIty reused the old photo when they re-framed her sampler but more research is needed. As you can see, the sampler looks and reads well but close inspection reveals numerous small moth holes however they don't affect the detail.
