MID 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, CHURCH & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARTHA GERRARD AGE 10 1845

Mid 19th century sampler by Martha Gerrard aged 10 - 1845. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower basket with a small bird standing on either side. There is a tree and church to the left of the flower basket with an angel mask above and a charming two storey red house to its right. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with the following verse which has a fru...it basket, flower and bird to the left side and a fruit basket and flower to the right

The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. The tree has a star above with a bird to its left and a carnation to its right. Each figure has a plaque at their side with that on the left containing Martha's details and the date of 1845 and the one on the right containing the words "Prepare to meet thy God." There is a rose basket on top of the left side plaque with a butterfly above, whilst the plaque to the right also has a rose basket on top with a bird standing by its side. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep honeysuckle border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby across the lower section and paler around the edges from where the sampler has been over a stretcher. There is also a small area of damage around the first two digits of the date in the left side plaque which has resulted in the loss of the majority of the stitch work in that area. The colours of the thread are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Martha first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time.Measures 17 1/2" x 17 1/2"
