Original Description:
Mid 19th century sampler by Ann Wilson aged 13 - 1864. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section contains Ann's details and the date of June 1864 underlined with a swagged border. There are four sets of family initials beneath the border whilst Ann's details have three sets to each side with a cr...own above the top set. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a charming house with a lawned area to the front with a carnation to the left and a tree to the right with dogs nearby. There are further sets of family initials around the roof of the house then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges and somewhat grubby with some areas of faint speckled staining. The colours of the wool are good with the purple having mellowed moreso than other shades as is often the case. There are also some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. I also want to mention the rather odd triangular stitching above the house, the swag border beneath Ann's name and the border beneath it and the initials CN by the left side chimney. These four things are worked in a different type of wool and the quality of the stitching is not as accomplished as that on the rest of the sampler. As such I think these are likely to be the work of a different hand and added at a later date. Measures 12 1/2" x 16"
