Mid 19th century sampler by Ann Spolding aged 17 - 1861. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with Ann's details and the date of 1861 to finish, The middle section of the gauze is stitched on the left side with a charming two storey house with a flower basket to its left and a floral motif, bird, crowns and an owl to its right. ...The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central floral urn flanked by a fruit basket and tree. There is a bird above each tree and a black bird standing on top of the fruit basket, whilst the topmost bloom of the central floral urn has a lion to its left and right The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker down the middle with a couple of dark marks down the right side edge. The colours of the thread are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. Measures 12" x 12" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
