The Florence Ceramics Company was started in 1942 by Pasadena housewife Florence Ward in the family garage. Within 7 years the company built a state-of-the-art ceramics plant on South San Gabriel Boulevard. Florence Ceramics produced high quality historical and literary figurines, birds, animals and artware for 24 years before being bought out by a rival company. Florence's first order of ceramics went to May's Dept. store in Pasadena. After the war her husband Clifford and son Clifford Jr. joined the company, and the factory reached its peak in the 1950's, employing 200. There were 9 showrooms across the country. These high end ceramics sold in department stores, jewelry stores and gift shops, ranging in price from $3 to $50 (remembering that $50 was a week's pay and a house payment at that time!). When the company sold in 1964 the ceramic figurine molds were destroyed, making each piece of Florence Ceramics rare and hard to find!
