Very nice vintage Hopi pottery water canteen. Unsigned, but the style of canteen and designs are similar to pottery attributed to the Hopi-Tewa potter Nampeyo or her daughters and granddaughters. This canteen has a finely formed spout that is sloped slightly to the front - a characteristic of Nampeyo canteens. The solid red half moon at the top of the design and the fine lines below it are similar to Nampeyo's designs. The Eagle Tail design has strong elements of black and re...d on yellow-orange glazing slip. Pottery walls are fairly thick. The canteen appears to have not been used. There are several very small pits and scratches consistent with age.
The canteen was bought by the seller's father in New Mexico about 1970.The leather hanging strap was probably added later. The canteen measures 5 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches deep by 6 1/2 inches tall.
