This antique Chinese embroidered flowers, insects, birds red sleeve band cuffs robe dates from the late 19th century, during the Qing Dynasty. It is made of a black silk fabric with pink silk fabric cut out appliqued colorful raised passed satin stitch hand embroidered trim with a variet...y of birds, insects and flowers. The robe has red silk wide sleeve band cuffs with gold thread couching work, which tiny red stitches hold the couching work together giving it a contrasting copper color appearance and colorful silk finely hand embroidered birds each representing one of the nine bird civil ranks crane, golden pheasant, peacock, wild goose, silver pheasant, egret, mandarin duck, quail, paradise flycatcher. This magnificent Manchu womens short robe surcoat is loose fitting, hip length, front opening with black silk knotted button toggles, pink silk embroidered birds front lappet ties, wide long full sleeves, colorful silk damask weave ribbon trim edging with a woven butterfly, coin pattern and is fully lined in a blue silk fabric inside. The robe measures 33 inches long, with a 44 inch chest, 12 inch neck and is 11 inches wide across the sleeve cuffs. It is in good as-is condition, with frayed rips along the silk damask weave ribbon trim edging (see close-ups). This is truly an exceptional piece of antique Chinese wearable art!
