The sword is a Koto katana, ca. 1500s from the Kaga School andis samurai-mounted. The blade and the mountings are in Excellent condition. The swordhas a blade length of 24.75 inches (63 cm). The blade features a well-grained itame hada that mixes with a smaller burlko-mokume hada. The hamon is a Bitchu-stylechu-suguha that is present the lengthof the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a streaking kaen boshi. The hamon is similar to theold Kamakura-era Aoe school with atight nioi guchi and ko-gunome, ko-ashi, and yo in andalong the hamon. There are also some spots of tobiyaki floating above the hamon.The tang is mumei, or unsigned. Based on the length of theblade, workmanship, and shape of the tang, the sword was likely made by the Kaga school, ca. 1500. Morespecifically, the Kaga swordsmith Ietsuguwas known for making swords in the Aoe style at this time. His workmanship is soclose he is referred to as ‘Kaga Aoe’. Kaga swords were well known forsharpness and cutting prowess. The blade comes in original Samurai mountings. They are in Excellent condition. Thetsuka features a black silk ito and custom menuki. The tsuba is a nice irontsuba with two accompanying seppa. The saya (scabbard) is lacquered black withan intricate design. The saya shows a few areas of missing finish, mostly alongthe edges, while retaining roughly 85-90% of originalfinish. The blade is in Excellentcondition. There are a couple very small micro nicks, a few very small spots ofrust, and a few scratches along the blade’s length. There are a few small warein the shinogi-ji. There are no majorflaws like hagire.Given this swords history, the workmanship, and the condition, I think thispiece would be an excellent addition for a collector of WW2 militaria orJapanese swords.Terms and additional items: This item is original and not aknockoff or fake.
