Essential work of comic artwork from the Meiji era, c. 1870s: "A Collection of Crazy Paintings." 36 pages of black outline prints, many with two designs to a page, covering all of the classic themes of Edo & Meiji comedy. Includes the Onna Daruma, frogs teaching in a Meiji-style classroom, Shoki and demons, blind men practicing the five arts, sake-loving Shojo with an empty vat, Benkei and the bell of Midera, a cat fighting a monkey, long armed and long legged men, an a...rgument in hell, 7 gods of good fortune, Fukusuke and Otafuku doing a michiyuki, Otsu-e enhancements, comic fishing incidents, smelly fish, Kintaro jealous of a monkey breastfed by Yamamba, playful demons and immortals, various animals acting as humans, ghosts, monsters and supernatural creatures, and much much more. Exceptionally rich picture book that is certain to bring a smile with every opening.
5 3/4 x 7 inch book. Blue patterned covers with original title slip. One small stain on the cover, some rubbing at its edges. Well bound, good condition inside, with some small brown spots here and there, but no marks, stains or worming.
Happy to provide additional photos. Know the price isn't cheap, but after eBay fees are subtracted it won't even quite come to what I paid for it in Japan.
