Small late 18th century linen and wool work sampler by Martha Biggin aged 11 - 1795. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle and lower sections contain Martha's details and her place of residence - Martha Biggin ended this June 1 Aged 11Y 1795. Calow. The word Love and Martha's initials are stitched beneath whilst In the Year of O...ur Lord 1795 runs across the bottom edge.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, quite dark and the colours of the wool are good with some stitch loss to the G in the first row of letters and the odd stitch elsewhere. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Martha first stitched it. Measures 7" x 9 3/4"
