If there is any question, ...please don't hesitate to email us and ask!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This is an absolutely stunning antique piece of exceptional quality, in equally stunning condition, as you can see, known in the meat-cutting trade as a Balkan Steel. Made in Germany by F. Dick, probably sometime in the early 20th century, it comes from a company that is still the world's finest maker of professional-quality knife steels for chefs and butchers, as it was at the time of its manufacture. In terms of materials, craftsmanship, condition and size, this steel have everything going for it one could hope for and more. As photos show, it's stamped with the maker's name and arrow logo on one side of its ridged and flat steel and has, "MADE IN GERMANY, " stamped into the other side. Its flattened beavertail shape, along with its ridges, make it ideal for honing the finest knives in the world. With a greater surface area upon which to expose your knife's edge, the steel does several times the work of a round, traditional steel with each and every stroke. It's fitted with handles made from either compressed leather or an early black composite material--impossible to tell on this one. These handles are birdseye-riveted over a full tang with integral lanyard ring. The handle is capped with a beautifully wrought brass bolster, with 2 matching brass rings at the pommel, which were meant to be used like a belt buckle, to close the steel around the apron strings of the chef or butcher who carried it (in the old fashion, dangling from his side), making this a masterpiece in every sense. For most people reading this and viewing the photos, it will be a glimpse at the single most beautiful steel they've ever seen and if you've seen nicer, than you've probably seen other even more ornate pieces also by F. Dick. The handle, steel and rings are all in superb condition, with no problems at all--as you can plainly see in the photos. To say the least, this is a special steel and will function as beautifully as it looks. It is further made special by the beauty and detail of its craftsmanship and materials--world class in every way. Measuring 16" long overall (including the rings) with a 10.25" steel, it's all you'll ever need to keep all of your finest knives in razor sharp hone. Condition is outstanding; the handle has no cracks, chips or looseness, which is rare for a piece like this and its ridges are still quite capable of putting the hone on a generation or two of constant use. No one's making Balkan steels like this these days, owing to the enormous cost of manufacturing, but here's your chance to pick one up that's as functional as it is beautiful. International packages cannot be insured and we cannot be held responsible for packages lost or damaged in transit (we pack very well, but shipping overseas is strictly at buyer's risk). Want tracking? You will have to pay an additional $13.65 for Registered Mail or you may upgrade to the option of Express Mail International. IMPORTANT: After TWELVE YEARS of doing everything we could to hold the line on int'l. shipping costs, we have taken our LAST loss, so we've been forced to implement a new policy in which Shipping costs on ANY international parcel sold for over $75 will now include a required $13.65 Registered Mail fee in order to make your purchase trackable.
