Late 18th century linen and silk work sampler by Hannah Dowling aged 10 - 1797. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with the following verse which is underlined with a strawberry border

The lower section of the linen is stitched with a delightful garden scene with a rolling stretch of grass which has a flower bush at the centre with a bird perched on top. The bush then has a flower basket and fruit tree to its left and right with a dog by the left side tree and a bird on a blossom branch by the tree on the right. Hannah's details and the date of March 12 1797 are stitched above this charming scene then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with the odd small faint mark. The colours of the silks are good with some slight bleeding to areas of the green stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hannah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs the edges of the linen have been cut at some point of time which has resulted in some minor fraying. There is also damage to both the edges and field of the linen, the latter having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 12 1/2" x 14 1/2"
