MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH INGLEDEW - 1843

Mid 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Ingledew - 1843. Worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, this sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central crown held aloft by a pair of hovering cherubs surrounded by stars. The words Be thou faithful unto death and I will give the(e) a crown of life are stitched below the crown with a floral urn and flower basket on either side, a cross motif above each basket, all unde...rlined with an undulating red border. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge which has Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Each figure then has a spray of tulips and a small flower basket at their side with a crested bird perched on a tree above the left side tulips and a floral urn and small bird above those on the right. There is a bird standing on top of the Tree with a star motif and birds to his left and right. The bottom section of the gauze is stitched with the following verse
Time as a faithful monitor attendsTo shew how life soon and uncertain endsTo proper studies then apply thy mindFor in a well spent life thou peace shalt find
Elizabeth's name and the date of 1843 are stitched to the right of the verse then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the thread are good with some slight bleeding to the black stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage just by the upper left corner of the outer border and visible tack marks and damage around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.
