MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH INGLEDEW - 1843
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:71792 |
Time as a faithful monitor attendsTo shew how life soon and uncertain endsTo proper studies then apply thy mindFor in a well spent life thou peace shalt find
Elizabeth's name and the date of 1843 are stitched to the right of the verse then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the thread are good with some slight bleeding to the black stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage just by the upper left corner of the outer border and visible tack marks and damage around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. Measures 17 3/4" across x 18 3/4"
