Original Description:
Mid 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Head aged 13 - 1846. Worked in silk on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central floral spray with a butterfly on either side and a house on top of a cliff by the left side butterfly and what I think is some sort of animal by that on the right. There are two butterflies beneath the floral spray with a flower basket and girl with a skipping rope to their lef...t and right. The central section of the gauze is stitched with a scene of buildings nestled amongst trees with a figure dressed in blue standing in the foreground, The scene is then flanked by a smaller scene of a cottage with a tree to its side and water to the front. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central floral edged plaque which contains Elizabeth's details and the date of May 1843. There is a tall bell flower motif on either side of the plaque then the whole piece is surrounded by a floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with general grubbiness and areas of speckled staining. The colours of the thread are good with some thinning in places and small areas of stitch loss.The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage to the field of the gauze and further damage around the edges, particularly the bottom one which has resulted in stitch loss to the floral border. Measures 12 3/4" x 17"
PLEASE NOTE - THE SAMPLER IS SHEDDING SOME VERY SMALL FIBRES OF THREAD ON THE REVERSE. AS SUCH I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT HANDLING BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM UNTIL IT IS BEHIND GLASS AND FRAMED.
