Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:712123 | Type of Advertising: Sign |
Brand: Honolulu Iron Works | Date of Creation: 1918 |
The Honolulu Iron Works was active from the early... 19th Century to the Mid 20th Century and is considered to be elemental in the development of the agricultural riches of the Islands first dating to the early 1800’s. It made machinery for the expanding sugar cane and pineapple plantations and made and repaired ships. By one account it built all the necessary machinery for 20 sugar plantations.
The actual builders plate measures 33 inches by 5 1/4 inches. It is attractively mounted on antique board with an overall measurement of 36 inches x 7 inches. It is heavy, weighing approximately 18 pounds. Please check all photos carefully, they tell the story. At some point a typed card describing the piece was attached to the sign, a bit of provenance. Again, see pictures. There are no breaks or other damage. There is slight curvature to the sign as a result of the way it was mounted on the rustic boards. As evidenced in the first picture, there are six original mounting holes for screws.
This was found at a small estate sale in Central farmland Illinois, I have no idea how it got there. I am selling this exactly as found, I have changed nothing. It’s still a little dirty and cobwebby.
My belief is that this is a rare relic of the Hawaiian Territory dating long before Hawaii became our 50th state in 1959. There can not be too many in existence as brass was scrapped and reused back then as it is now.
I believe that quality and rarity always sells, therefore I am confident selling this auction style, low starting bid and no reserve. I will not end the auction early, no Buy It Now offers entertained.
This item will be expensive to ship as I plan on having it professionally packed, crated and insured. My hope is that it ends up where it started, back in Hawaii, again adding to the shipping cost. At this point I am estimating $150 to ship, the buyer will pay actual cost and any overage in shipping charge will be reimbursed.

PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING. DO NOT BID IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PAY FOR IT.
