Author: Arnold Schoenberg, Translated by Robert D. W. Adams
Publisher: Philosophical Library, New York, 1948, 336 pp., 8” x 5-1/2”
This translation of Schoenberg’s monumental work into English is intended as a student edition, for practical use, and is considerably abridged from the
original. Much philosophical, polemic material has been omitted, but the essentials, explanations, directions, examples ...have been included. The portions of the
text used are those indicated in Erwin Stein, Praktischer Leitfaden zu Schonbergs Harmonielehre.
Book is in used condition, structurally sound, the cover is secure, the spine is secure, all pages intact and in good condition. Some of the books have a faint water mark in the lower right corner, some have the same very light mark at the bottom of the gutter. The book cover has the most wear. Book cover has some edge and corner wear on the black cloth covered boards, corners bumped and wearing through. There is some light fraying at the top and bottom of the spine. There is a library number on the spine, but appears to be from a private library if any, there is a vintage book plate with the name Parkhill adhered to the front fly-leaf. The back cloth cover has fading, discoloration at places and some marks, it has mottled light spots, please see photos above. The front cover looks nice. Inside the front cover there are small ink numerals in the upper left corner and a name and date written neatly in ink on the front fly-leaf at the top edge. Inside the back cover there are a lot of marks and discoloration primarily along the right edge and bottom edges, random marks on blank pages. Some of the pages have passages underlined in ink. 106 pages out of 336 are underlined, some heavily, see photos. Out of the 106 there are about 4 pages with small musical notes or musical staff with notes drawn neatly and small.
