This sale is for an original 1855 edition of "A VOICE TO AMERICA; OR, THE MODEL REPUBLIC, ITS GLORY, OR ITS FALL" by Frederick Saunders and Thomas Bangs Thorpe, published by Edward Walker... of New York.YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!!!Frequently compared to the modern day "Tea Party, " the Know-Nothing or American Party began as a secret society in New York in 1849. Membership was limited to males of British-American lineage. The "Know-Nothing" name came from their original attempts at secrecy. When a member was asked about the party's activities they were told to reply: "I know nothing."The Know-Nothings first entered politics under the name the American Party in 1855, but the movement can be traced to the venomous Nativist Movement of the 1830's and 1840's. During those decades violent encounters between immigrants and 'native-born Americans' would occur in American cities. In July 1844, riots broke out in the city of Philadelphia. Nativists battled Irish immigrants, and two Catholic churches and a Catholic school were burned by the mobs. At least 20 people were killed.
Fiercely anti-immigration, they were characterized by xenophobia and anti-Catholic sentiment. They were empowered by popular fears that the country was being overrun by German and Irish Catholic immigrants, who were often regarded as hostile to republican values and controlled by the Pope in Rome.
Irish immigrants, clustered in the larger urban centers, bore the brunt of Know-Nothing wrath. Seen as charity cases dumped onto American shores the Irish were willing to work for lower wages in unskilled jobs, taking away work from native-born Americans.
German immigrants, flooding America after the failed 1848 revolutions, also attracted fear and suspicion. Like the Irish, they were Catholic and did not 'keep the Sabbath' the way Protestants did. And Germans brought beer, a particular evil among New Englanders that still clung to Puritan values. Germans were also identified as socialists.
Know-Nothings chanted "America for Americans" and demanded a 25 year period of naturalization (which would prevent the Irish for voting for a quarter of a century) and the banning of any non-native born American from office-holding.
The Know-Nothing Party eventually disintegrated over a split on the issue of slavery.
At the time, many Americans either considered the party a joke or were appalled by them. In 1855 Abraham Lincoln expressed his own disgust with them in a letter. Lincoln noted that if the Know-Nothings ever took power, the Declaration of Independence would have to be amended to say that all men are created equal "except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." Lincoln went on to say he would rather emigrate to Russia, where despotism is out in the open, then live in such an America. It offers a REVIEW OF THE CAUSES OF THE DECLINE AND FAILURE OF THE REPUBLICS OF SOUTH AMERICA, MEXICO, AND OF THE OLD WORLD, APPLIED TO THE PRESENT CRISIS IN THE UNITED STATES (1855).The subjects treated of concern not only the statesman and politician, but every American citizen, however humble or exalted - whether native or naturalized. An extension of vast and valuable facts have been prepared. These particular words are mentioned in the publisher’s preface of 1855:"As a nation, we are essentially eclectic in character, receiving constant accession to our numbers from all parts of the civilized glove. It is, therefore, of the first importance to the integrity and security of our free institutions, that the balance of power in the republic should be sedulously guarded; that a spirit of nationality should rule in the councils of our government; and that the element of foreign political faith, as well as foreign manners and customs, be carefully precluded from vitiating our national morals, - the proud distinction of a free people consisting in it public virtue, which is the animating and sustaining principle of true democracy."In these thirty-one subheadings, valuable amounts of history can be found concerning governments, division of property, religious and political powers starting with early civilization and gradually leading up to the United States. It starts with the UNITED STATES - RETROSPECTIVE AND PROSPECTIVE and flows to the ancient republics and previous world powers such as Roman and Greek empires, the Fall of Rome, to the Middle Ages and then ANGLO-SAXON RACE AND FREEDOM. Further into this interesting book is THE EVILS OF MILITARY ORGANIZATIONS EXCLUSIVELY OF FOREIGNERS. Another amazing chapter is DEMORALIZING INFLUENCE OF DEMAGOGISM!
