The following item is an original 1901 GAR Encampment book from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This book came from the personal collection of William T. Ziegler of Gettysburg. At the outbreak of The Civil War Ziegler enlisted in Company F of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. They were at The Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Spotsylvania. On June 23, 1864, William was captured at The Battle of Weldon Railroad. He along with others were immediately placed on a train and transported to And...ersonville Prison in Georgia. He was a prisoner at Andersonville from early July 1864 till the camp closed permanently in April of 1865. There are accounts that William was the last soldier to walk out of Andersonville at the closing leaving only Capt. Wirz behind. William was able to eventually make it back to his farm in Gettysburg. His farm played a large role in Day 3 at Gettysburg as Pickett's Charge crossed through his property. Part of the area is known as Ziegler's Grove. Able to survive the war and his imprisonment at Andersonville lived many more years as an active member of the GAR. This book with his name labeled affixed to them is from the 1901 GAR encampment at Gettysburg. The book is in very good condition. The binding and hinges are strong and solid with leather with marbled boards. This 1901 edition has some wear and scuffing to the leather. The inner text is very clean and free of underlining or notations. This copy has a leather label personalized with "William T. Ziegler" on the front. Overall an amazing book from William T. Zieger, Civil War soldier, prisoner at Andersonville, and the owner of the farm on the Gettysburg Battlefield that Pickett's Charge crossed through. Anything relating to Ziegler is now very scarce as his immense Gettysburg collection was sold off years ago. This is one of the few items still available. This item is guaranteed to be an original book owned by William Ziegler from his personal library.
