For sale is an exceptionally rare First Edition of the original parts of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1837. 624p.p. 8vo. The full suite of plates by Phiz and Buss here present, in the earliest issue possible, with only the page numbers at the foot. The later suppressed Buss plates at p.69 and p.74 are found only in the earliest examples of this title. Hodling to p.260. This scarce example boasts all of Smith...'s first issue text points. Bound in a rare and most desirable publisher’s original brown/green cloth. Panels in blind to the spine, ornate panels, and the title tooled directly in gilt. The author’s named abbreviated to ‘Chas’, also in gilt to the spine. Original plain endpapers.Externally it remains in pleasing order. There is surface rubbing in places, and repairs to the hinges. The hinges are very firm and the gutters intact. Internally it is delightfully clean to the text block, and the plates are spotted and marked in places, but broadly clean.Overall, this an extremely sought after, handsome and VERY rare example of this famous title.
