A moving Family History of Japanese Americans during WW2 under the (WRA) War Relocation Authority.
This is a private memoir written by Thomas Tozaburo Sashihara, distributed to his family and a few close friends. It starts with "Pearl Harbor Day", December 7 1941, and gives a first hand account of his... family's forced incarceration in the Heart Mountain "relocation center" in Wyoming for Japanese Americans during World War II. A first generation emigrant from Japan ("Issei"), Thomas humbly tells the story of how he was stripped of his businesses and sent to a camp with other Japanese Americans in a time of great turmoil. Left to their own to organize and survive, he was elected the Chairman of the Block Councils (p.79) -- essentially, the Japanese "mayor" of the camp. Thomas also speaks of his deep Christian faith. He adds a 20 year postscript memorializing his great joy at finally being able to become an American citizen (following the effective repeal of the Immigration Act of 1924 - which prevented "undesirables" such as Asians from becoming American citizens). His wife Chiyo also inserts additional photos, including his accepting The Order of the Sacred Treasure that he received from Emperor Hirohito in 1970 for his services to Japanese Americans. 151 pages.
