Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:7063122 | Model: Commodore PET |
Type: Home Computer | Brand: Commodore |
HistoryThe PET 4016 comes from a time when personal computers were new and sensational, before Apple and IBM came to dominate the scene. This machine is a part of that early history, and some peripherals and programs can still be found.
The original PET of 1977 had a 40-column display and a “chiclet” keyboard, which had some limitations, so the PET 4016 was built with a larger more professional keyboard and enhanced Basic 4.0.
These machines were hugely ...successful in the education market of the 1980's and this machine was originally used in the Waterloo County Board of Education.
A useful resource for these old PETs is The Toronto PET Users Group (TPUG) at www.tpug.ca.
Condition of this PetOffered for sale is an example of the Commodore PET model PET 4016, in good working condition. The "PET 4016" means this was a unit with a 40-column display and 16 MB of storage. It appears this particular PET was upgraded to 32 MB of storage because the startup messages say: "COMMODORE BASIC 4.0" "31743 BYTES FREE".
There is an IEEE-488 port for the attachment of external floppy drives and printers (untested).
As found, this 4016 had a few small scratches on the dirty case and a dusty keyboard that made for erratic operation of most keys. The case was thoroughly cleaned to be quite presentable. The keyboard was removed and carefully cleaned with distilled water so all keys now work reliably. The inside of the machine was also carefully cleaned to remove dust and dirt. The label on the back of the CRT housing was missing, so a duplicate was made from a digital photo and it was glued in place.
The label on the front of the machine above the keyboard and below the display that says "PET 4016", is present but the upper right and left corners are slightly lifted.
Please see the pictures of the actual machine to see its cosmetic condition. One of the pictures shows a small program running to calculate the area of a circle, thus demonstrating the computer is in working condition. There are no noticeable burn marks on the screen.
