The gilt decoration and titles to compartments are surface worn and dulled with age. Internally, the endpapers and blanks are a little browned and foxed. There is a small ink name? to the top corner of the front free endpaper. There is a small amount of worming to the bottom of the front free endpapers, and continuing through the contents , including plates/maps, getting smaller progressively, before petering out entirely by page 47. The frontispiece and title page have a small ink stain to the top corner/edge, one whith a small tear. The prelims have some light grubbiness. The contents are lightly toned, with some scattered foxing (a bit heavier around the plates) and offsetting from the engraved plates. One leaf has a small dark browned spot with rust hole to centre, affecting a few letters. There are a few light scattered grubby marks, and the odd light crease. Else in reasonable condition throughout.

"First English edition. Frezier, a French royal military engineers, was under contract to sail to the Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defence against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America in order that they would have some knowledge of that area for possible military operations. The first part of this book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn and was used by contemporary and even by later navigators. The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. Frezier, a man of observation, brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value...Among items collected were Chilean strawberry plants which were successfully propagated in France."
Complete, first English edition, of this remarkable work.
