A scarce pamphlet, measuring approx. 17.5cm x 14cm. Leaves are delicately held together. Pale browning/foxing/offsetting. Touch bumped to edges, with corner creases. Else in reasonably condition for age.

Detailing the appointment of Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex, [1591 – 1646 the famous English Parliamentarian and soldier]. To be the first Captain-General and Chief Commander of the Parliamentarian army (The Roundheads), after his 'valour and dexterity' at the 'bloody Battell, neere Keniton in Warwickshire' (Battle of Edgehill)
Essex commanded the Parliamentarian army at Edgehill, the first pitched battle of the English Civil War, where he is said to have stood alongside his men wielding a pike at the head of an infantry regiment.
'The Lords and Commons assembled in Parliament, having upon mature deliberation and assured confidence and Fidelity of Robert Earle of Essex, chosen and appointed him Captain Generall of the Forces raised by the authority of Parliament, for the defence of the true Protestant Religion, the King, Parliament and Kingdome, now in great danger …. so much care Valour and dexterity, as well by the extremest hazard of his life, in a bloody Battell, neere Keniton in Warwickshire, as by all the Actions of a most Excellent and expert Commander in the whole course of his Imployment ……"
"It is this day ordered by the Lords and Commons in Parliament Assembled that a search be made in the City of London, and suburbs thereof and Westminster and Southwarke and places adjacent for all Officers and Common Souldiers, belonging to the Army under the command of his Excellency the Earl of Essex, and that they apprehend all such as they shall finde and bring them forthwith to the palace Yard at Westminster.."
"Order shall be published by beating of the Drum in the City and other places aforesaid and such officers or Souldiers as shall be found here, after to morrow from their colours shall be sent to the Lord Generall to receive Marshall law for their Offence"
