Thisis the first printing of the first edition of John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece ofhuman endurance and sensitivity, The Grapes of Wrath, published by The VikingPress in New York in 1939, with its original first-state dust jacket. “FirstPublished in 1939” appears on the copyright page, and “First Edition” on thelower corner of the front fap of the dust jacket, with the original price of $2.75unclipped on the upper corner of the front flap as well. Th...ebook itself is near fine, with no markings throughout, and the images on the frontcover and the spine still sharp and crisp, though with about half an inch of minorbleeding on the inside pastedowns on an otherwise clear and crisp image of apage of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Thedust jacket, however, shows some wear, with some chipping of the spine ends, and of the creases between the front and rear panels and the flaps. But theimage on the front and rear panels and the spine remains overall sharp andcrisp, though with a bit of rubbing on some of the creases. So overall this isa very good to near fine copy of this great novel. The starting price is $50 witha reasonable reserve given the condition of the book, on the one hand, and thedust jacket on the other. This book is a must for any collector of the greatfiction produced in the first half of the 20th Century.
