Being offered is an 18thC signed and dated 1798 Philadelphia sampler; a prototype from the recognizable "Band Sampler Group" with its identifiable horizontal bands that evolved from the Misses Marsh School...s (see Betty Ring Vol II pgs.333-337). The sampler (appx 19x22) features vibrant horizontal bands by 10 year old Eliza Bucklus; as well as penmanship and verses that have wonderful misspellings....(top verse)"How Blest Are They Who Always Keep The Pure and Perfect Whey, Who Never From The Sacred Paths of God's Commandments Strey".....(lower verse)"I Strive Each Action To Aprove, To God's All Seeings Eye, No Danger Shall My Hope Remove, Because He Still Is Neigh". Despite all her wonderfully naive misspellings in her verses, talented 10 year old Eliza was very accomplished and skillful with her needle. Her inscription reads Eliza Bucklus her sampler work'd in the 10th year of her age in the year of our lord April 28, 1798....and penmanship reads Gratitude Evinces Worth. The sampler is laid on acid free board in its antique molded frame; and has wonderful color and contrast.
