Mid 19th Welsh sampler by Margret Evans aged 13 - 1847. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with the biblical quotation - It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Heb.10.31 - which is underlined with a geometric border. The middle and lower sections of the gauze are stitched with the names William and Catherine of Portdonorwig - probably Margaret's parent...s, with an impressive sailing ship beneath, a pennant on each mast. There is a dog and flower to the left of the ship and a flower and two crowns to its upper right. Margaret's details and the date of 1847 are stitched beneath the ship then the whole piece is surrounded by rows of tree motifs which are then surrounded by a deep floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with staining running across the lower section, around the edges and a darker stain in the upper left quadrant. The colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Margret first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is an area of damage to the right of the left flag and a few scratches to the gauze through the rigging. There are also visible tack marks and damage around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. The top edge of the gauze also retains remnants of its original edging cloth.Measures 18 1/2" x 16 1/2" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING.
