Very small mid/late 18th century linen and silk work sampler by Hannah Townsend - 1777. Worked in an attractive limited colour palette, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters and numbers with Hannah's details and the date of 1777 contained within the lower section. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places. The sampler is behind glass so I'm ...not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also some slight bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The sampler is contained within an early 19th century hand carved gilded frame which retains much of its original gilding and has several losses to the gesso around the edges which reveal the wood beneath. The frame is also partially obscuring the very edges of the stitch work down the right side.Measures 6 1/2" across x 6" (sight size) and 8 1/2" x 8" including the frame.
