Offered here is an excellent example of a pre-war baby 4x4 Rolleiflex camera, the 4RF-430, usually referred to as the “Sports” baby Rolleiflex because a single lever under the taking lens both cocks and releases the shutter enabling rapid sports photography. This example is made more unusual by its late production serial number of 734668. One Rollei collectors book quotes official sources as saying the terminal serial number was 733000 while noting one collector as repor...ting his example is number 734556. Another publication on Rollei cameras cites the last number as 734999. In any case, this example is most likely one of the latest production examples still extant. Condition wise, a thorough examination would lead one to conclude this camera isn’t even 8 years old, let alone close to 80. Cosmetically, it’s an easy 9 of 10, the only faults being some slight paint chipping at the upper edge of the rear panel of the viewing hood and another tiny spot at the top of the hood where it’s retained by the hood latch. There is also some minor paint wear around the perimeter of the plate at the base of the film advance crank.The 2.8 taking and viewing lenses are clear and scratch free. The one second increment on the shutter looks to be slightly on the slow side but all the others from a half second up look to be spot on. This Sports Rolleiflex may be as near to new condition as you will find and made all the more collectible by its very late production serial number.
