This antique whiskey jug is from a personal collection. It has been carefully stored for decades.
Now offered is a beautiful and rare pottery whiskey jug from mid-to-late 1800’s. Standing at 7-1/2” tall, it is embossed with “Minnehaha” and a nice graphic depiction of two small birds sitting at a stylized, ornate fountain, with branches, leaves and flowers. Below are also embosse...d “Martindale & Johnston/ Philadelphia”. On the back of the jug is an embossed trademark (?) print.Minnehaha means "laughing water”, a slang term for whiskey.This is the blue variant of the jug; others can be found in black and brown.I’m dating this glossy finish art pottery jug to dates between 1869-1887, the years that Thomas Martindale and William Johnston worked together as "Importers, Grocers, Wine and Spirit Merchants" at 10th & Market Street in Philadelphia.
This piece is in excellent overall condition. Here is what I see:The glaze is in overall great condition, with no cracks or voids to be found.There is minor crazing under the glaze, but you have to look closely to see it. Note that these pictures were taken at extremely close range with a high-end camera in order to accurately show condition. The crazing is not that visible to the eye.There is a light brown/gray coloration in some areas, such as near the neck. At first I thought this was some sort of staining, but on closer examination, it is likely the base color of the material under the white glaze. If you check the bottom, you'll see that color, which carries up to the other areas. These areas are most pronounced near the spout, the handle, and along the bottom rim.There are a few surface inclusions. I'm not sure what they are, and I’m not qualified to remove them, but they are quite minor.Best of all! There are no cracks, chips, or repairs anywhere on the jug.
