Early 19th century sampler by Hannah Park aged 13 - 1831. Worked in wool on a soft cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The top edge of the gauze is stitched with a central rose bush flanked by a fruit tree, floral urn, flower, strawberry, butterfly and bird. The middle section is stitched with a Greek key framework which contains two rows of alphabet letters, three rows of sets of family initials and Hannah's details plus the date o...f Jan 18 1831. Each side of the framework is stitched with a floral urn, fruit tree and tree, whilst its bottom section contains a smaller floral edged framework with a floral motif to its left and right and containing the following short verse
This world is vain and full of painAnd troubles great and soreBut they are best who are at restWith Christ for evermore
The lower section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with a delightful two storey red house with two birds above its roof and a fruit tree to its left side which has a bird perched on top. Each side of the house is stitched with a large flower basket with a dog and small flower basket to its lower left and right and a bird and crown on either side of its topmost bloom. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some small faint stains and a slightly darker line down the middle. The colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hannah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 16" x 17 3/4"
