Here we offer a Cut Steel Hilted Smallsword. The hilt is cut steel in great condition with a dark age patina.The grip is silver wire and ribbon. It is a masterpiece of the grip binders profession. There is a silver ribbon with a unique square design this is surrounded by two sizes of twisted silver wire there is a "Turks Head " collar both top and bottom of the grip, see photos.The blade is the rare "Colichemarde " style . This was said to have been invented by Count von Konigsmark a r...enowned duelist . This style has a wider forte , about one third of the blade from the base then narrows to a more slender blade to the tip, see photo. This allows the user to have a stronger blade at the base to ward off the opponents blade but then a lighter blade for quicker movement. It was popular from about 1680 to about 1720. This blade is in great antique condition with a dark age patina . Both sides of the forte about 8" is profusely etched with designs. These are scrolls and at the base a sun image , see photos . It is possible this sword was from the reign Louis the 14th , the Sun King. No scabbard these being very slender hardly ever survive 300 years . I would place this as circa 1720 or earlier .
