Original Description:
Huge Collection of ScienceFiction-Related Fanzines & Ephemera For Sale (1930s-2000s)
I am currently selling an extremelylarge collection of science fiction-related fanzines, newsletters, convention booklets and other ephemera from the late 1930s to theearly-2000s, well over 3000 pieces total. (The vast majority is fromthe 1950s through the 1970s.) Although some of the pieces werecollected by myself over my forty-plus years as a fan and avidcollector, the core of this collecti...on was originally owned by thelate F.M. Busby and his wife Elinor, which I acquired last year.Anyone familiar with fanac and thevarious sci-fi APAs know just how rare the pieces in this collectionare. For most of their combined histories, most APAs (Fantasy AmateurPress Association (1937-Present), Spectator Amateur Press Society(1947-Present), Neffer Amateur Press Alliance (1959-1971), etc.) never had more than sixty-five members at any given time (it was usually far less for most), which means that only the same number offanzines were produced and distributed amongst the other members.Given the “disposable” nature of such DIY publications andnewsletters, only a handful of copies of any particular issue stillexist. (Some are undoubtedly one of a kind.) Hence the pricelessnessof this collection, and it's importance to science fiction fandom. In addition to well over twenty-sevenhundred fanzines, this collection also includes about a hundredpieces of vintage science fiction convention memorabilia (mostlybooks but some ephemera) and about two hundred and fifty pieces ofmisc. science fiction fanzine-related flyers, brochures, letters, correspondence, postcards, photos, ballots, polling tallies, membership forms, etc. (Such one-of-a-kind items includes an originalphotograph and negative of F.M. and Elinor Busby in costume fromOctober 1958, probably for a sci-fi convention. Also of historicinterest, some of the ballots are the actual hand-written talliesused for determining Hugo Award winners by the actual judges.)Over the last few months, I have donemy best to index the entire contents of this collection. Admittedly,I am not an expert on the subject, although I have learned a greatdeal while cataloguing it and have made corrections along the way.For example, when I started, I didn't realize that titles such asCoswalzine and Sapzine changed the title for each issue, so early onsome of these were erroneously indexed as separate titles. Also, thetotal number of pieces is greater than what I initially estimated, and some fanzines included aren't even listed; I didn't realize thatmultiple titles from the same mailing period were often “bundled”together when shipped, so what I originally thought was a singlepublication are actually two or more stapled together. (How many Imay have missed, I don't know, as I only discovered this towards theend of my cataloguing.)All are complete and most are wellpreserved unless otherwise stated. Many may display such wear asrusty staples, creases, minor tears, dust shadows or light stains. (Ihave done my best, though, to mention any pieces that are seriouslydamaged.)The collection does include someduplications, which are noted.Shipping within the United States is free, and the entire collection weighs about 300lbs. total. (I am only makingthis auction available to bidders within the United States, butserious international bidders can contact me if they are interested,as long as they understand that International Priority Shipping willbe CONSIDERABLY more.)I have included a mostly itemized listof the pieces in this collection below; since this index is overtwenty pages in length, I have no idea if there will be room for itin its entirety, but I will include what I can.Feel free to ask any questions, and Iwill do my best to accommodate.INDEX TO FANZINE COLLECTIONFANZINES (2707 pieces total):Symbols/Numbers (x7)[UNDECIPHERABLE SYMBOLS] x4 (1964-1965)#1-#46:00:42 A.M. x2 (1971) #1 (x2)612 x1 (1952) Un#
