Very good condition and guaranteed original WWI ImperialGerman Model 71/98 Mauser bayonet. This very rare bayonet was originally madeas a Model 1860 Fusilier bayonet for the Dreyse Needle Gun rifle. The blade waslater depot or arsenal mated to a Model 98 Mauser hilt for use on the GEW 98rifle. Marked on the left ricasso with a script “g”. Right ricasso has Prussian“Crown W” acceptance marking and 1862 date. Massive 197/8” blade has originalbright finish with light pit...ting throughout, and was lightly sharpened.Remaining metal finish is original bright with some gray and brown patina. Woodgrips have original finish and a good tight fit with some normal handlingmarks, lock button functions fine. Fitted in correct original leather scabbardthat has brass throat and tip. Leather shows a little normal wear, stitchingand staples are tight.
Scabbard has unit markings on the throat. Also complete with correct original leather frog that isnicely maker marked “L. Estelmann Strassburg” on the back and dated 1915.Leather is soft and supple with some normal wear, stitching and rivets aretight. A very rare German Mauser bayonet variation that will make anoutstanding advanced addition to a collection.
