1st Empire PREMIER Napoleonic Commissaires See Guerres A La Chassauer Saber. Deluxe superior empire saber. Commissioners of warsThe commissioners of wars form the administrative body of the army. They had been created in 1356, and their title and employment varied during the old regime. All the details of the military administration, both in the places of war and other places of garrison, as in the camps and armies, are entrusted to them. The commissioners of the wars, i...n function in the places or the armies, are always considered as forming part of the staff.
The decrees of September 20 and October 14, 1791, reconstituted the corps of commissioners. These texts were modified by the decree of April 16, 1793 and by the law of 28 Nivôse year 3 (and the instruction of 16 ventôse).
The law of 23 Fructidor, year VII (September 9th, 1799), relating to the personnel of the war, fixed the number of the commissioners of the wars at 400, of which 40 commissioners-ordonnateurs, 180 commissaires of the first class, and 180 commissioners of second class.
The decree of the Consuls of 9 Pluviose year 8 (January 29, 1800) splits the body in two, creating Inspectors Revues, responsible for the organization of bodies, the holding of controls and the formation of journals. As for the commissioners of the wars, they preserve the surveillance of the supplies, the levy of the contributions in enemy country, the police of the stages and convoys, food, hospitals, prisons; the distribution of food, fodder, heating, clothing and equipment, and the verification of the resulting expenses.
The decree of 9 Pluviôse year 8 organizes the body as follows:
- 35 statutory auditors
- 120 first class
ordinary commissioners - 120 second class ordinary commissioners
- 35 deputies.Uniform:The uniform of the commissioners of the wars is determined by the regulation concerning the uniforms of the generals and officers of the staffs, of the 1st vendémiaire year 7 (x september 1798), and the decree of 9 pluviôse year 8 brings him only one slight change. The coat is national blue, doubled likewise; first stapled on the chest and adorned with scarlet cuffs, the decree of 9 Pluviose removes the red cuffs.
Blue reverse collar, mounted on a straight collar, eight centimeters high. Blue facings, white clad patte trimmed with three small buttons. Cross pockets, the leg has three points and is lined with three large buttons.
Jacket and white panties.This saber blade measures a massive 33.75 in length. In honest condition, wonderful original wired wraped around leather insert. Signed by Johan Schimmelbusch & Co. (J S& C) . This dates to early consulate period. Spine has familar symnbol seen of other noted swords that have surfaced. This is the most superior example amongst them all. Complete example. Everything intact. Tang unmolested. Full length officer length 33.75. Full length in scabbard is approximatly 41.50.This is a rather scarce saber of only a Soldier count of 300 through the entire Empire. The 2 examples that have appeared on the internet or in the Epee form. This is a rather deluxe style saber of the early consulate period.
