FAMOUS MONSTER FORRY ACKERMAN 44th birthday fanzine SIGNED BY MANY rare 1960 Famous Monster, Forry Ackerman No. 44 was a special publication edited by Larry Byrd and Ron Haydock on the occasion of Forrest J. Ackerman’s 44th birthday (on November 24, 1960). This is from the original printing done for the occasion in 1960 (and not the reprint edition done in 2000). The front cover and centerspread are offset, everything else is ditto.
There are articles, tributes, Famous Monsters of ...Filmland spoofs and other writing by Ron Haydock, Larry Williams, Ray Bradbury, Fritz Leiber and several unsigned. Also, a five-page comic and back cover by Chuck Scarborough as well as other artwork that’s unsigned.
But the highlight of this item is the many autographs, leading off with Forrest J. Ackerman himself writing “4e” on his forehead on the front cover. His long-time friend Marjii Ellers signed her first name below a comic caricature on the back cover.
The inside back cover is packed with autographs, including (from top to bottom, more or less): Rick Sneary, Len Moffatt, Charles Burbee, Jim Harmon, Marianne Hall (who says she’s a friend of “Billern, ” aka L.A. fan Bill Ellern), Trina (Robbins, but she was Castillo then and used only her first name -- and accompanying her signature is a caricature), Walt Liebscher, Ron Cobb, Larry Byrd, Ingrid Fritsch, Bruce Henstell, Charles Nuetzel (signed only his last name) and A.E. Van Vogt.
Remaining signatures seem to be Paul Shoemaker, Bill Martin, Brigitte Winter and Al Germeshausen. And maybe Paul Robbins? All signatures are cross-referenced with the "Monster-Birthday Club Members" list inside.
