E.F. Payne Bamboo Fly Rod Bonefish 9’, two piece with two perfect tips and original tube.Custom! Super Rare Payne rod for sale. This is an extremely rare Payne Bonefish custom order through Abercrombie & Fitch of New York.I bought this rod few years ago with out it being “in-hand”.I was not certain if it would be an authentic Payne Bonefish as they are rarer then hens teeth;however, when rod arrived and I took it out...I knew right away that is was the “real deal”.I have e...xtensive experience in cane rods for 45 years and it was easy to see that the rod was 100% genuine.Rod was in perfect, lightly used condition: Tips all straight, matched, varnish was original and in excellent condition.Hardware, ferrules, guides, stripper all Payne.Custom built extended butt, reel seat in anodized black with cedar filler, uniquely Payne, as was the rubber button. All as it should be.Perfect cane work-Payne quality, etc. No repairs, no damage.Original Payne bag & Correct early 60’s tube.Only issue was that the wraps were extremely dried out.The original varnish was superb with no grazing, drying or melting.I called Steve Blake, one of the very best Payne restorationists and top Payne authorities in the world. He agreed to look the rod over and redo the dried out wraps.Only the dried out wraps were re-done by Steve Blake in original Payne silks-he has a suppply. After the rod was done.I talked to Steve about the rod in great detail: He confirmed that it was a genuine Payne Bonefish with all original Payne components and was made at Payne factory and most likely a custom order.Correct guides(original), correct ferrules( great fit & original). He confirmed 100% authenticity of cane work and varnish. He also explained that it was not uncommon for this period of Payne wraps to dry and he said that he only replaced the wraps and the wrap varnish. The rest of the rod, including the cork grip, guides, varnish, ferrules, seat, etc. are all original and nothing was replaced. The varnish on all cane shafts is original. This rod is spectacular.I cast it, and it is smooth, powerful with an 8 or 7 line.Tight straight, full length.Truly magnificent and ultra-rare in this condition and configuration. We discussed this rod on the phone for about 45 minutes after he completed the wrap work.Steve explained the Payne Bonefish reel seat, the button, and the authenticity of the package.I questioned if the ferrules were original - he said they were original and that they had NOT originally blued, even though some Payne Bonefish Rods had blackened ferrules.Ferrule fit is terrific. The rod is also unusual as it is inscribed on the original varnish as being custom made for Robert Miller.Steve said that, although rare, Payne did do custom orders for certain customers.I did research that Robert Miller did have at least one IGFA world record and was a “big time” angler on the East Coast. The original rod tube also has a genuine Bahamas Port of Entry customs label on the tube, which is 100% authentic for the period & further indicating it was indeed used for Bonefish by Miller.Spectacular rod and one that you will be hard pressed to find in this original condition.I will ship world wide at cost. Please be aware however; that overseas shipping will be pricey due to length of tube. Please remember that US dollar is currently about 35% stronger then Canadian dollar...good if you are in US. This rod is re-listed after winning bid from couple of weeks ago asked out...winning bid was around $1500.Please only bid if you’re are seriously interested- this is a great rod and extremely rare.
