ANTIQUE NAVAJO RUG
A collector's item. Super old. Hand woven from natural wool.
Authentic Navajo antique rug. Traditional Saddle blanket. Large size. Of all the rugs I've sold here, this is probably the best. So if you like rare antiques from the Old West, go f...or it! From turn of the 19th Century, 1900 or so.
I think I was destined to sell Native American relics & artifacts, must be in my genes. I'm related to Jacob Hamblin. Mr. Hamblin was the first white man to cross the Colorado river on horseback. He would later be the first settler of the Old West to bring carded wool to the Navajo in the mid 1800's. I am one of the last 2 remaining relatives of the Paiute bride that he rescued from the Mountain Meadow Massacre. He also negotiated the first peace treaty between the Ute & the Navajo. I'm related to him on mom's side. On dad's side my relatives owned a trading post in Arizona in the late 1800's, it was later sold in 1902. So we've been around these handsome Navajo rugs for generations.
This one appeals to me for many reasons. First, it's a traditional blanket, Native design. Color scheme is awesome-- rich red color, to the cream, tan & chocolate brown desert hues.
Also, I like this relic because it's pretty free from Western influence, this is an older design, in those natural, earthy hues that the Navajo are by now famous for. It's from the American Southwest, Arizona, Four Corners area. Very collectible, handsome weaving.
The good thing about this piece is that it's always going to be worth more than you paid for it. These continue to appreciate in value, important people like W. Randolph Hearst & others have collected these & displayed them in their mansions & ranch homes for decades.
This one is really old, 1900's to 1910, easily more than 100 years old. There is some wear, tassels missing, some wear. No major holes. Only a few tiny spots, considered very clean for it's age. I photographed both sides so that you can see it's in good shape. The wool is soft, woven by a master weaver. There is a selvege edge & lazy lines.
Fabulous displayed long ways above a couch, or used to anchor a table in a study, or you can mount it in a shadowbox frame to preserve it. This is an heirloom which can be passed on for generations to come.
I also find the design very appealing. The diamond shapes with thunderbirds inside is very hard to do, the points require the skilled hand of a master weaver. This is all vegetable dyed, meaning the dyes come from plants like sage brush, etc. Most of the wool is natural sheep, undyed, but the rust required the tribe to cook a plant to get that color. The cream wool is natural, undyed churro.
Measures 73 inches long (6 feet 1 inch) by 46 inches wide (so roughly 6 feet by 4 feet more or less). Thick, solid, good, tight weave. This is a top quality, hand carded real antique Navajo wool rug.
I did notice that one side has a brighter shade of red than the other, it's just a matter of which look you prefer. This is an authentic antique with age appropriate wear, but overall in good shape for its age. It's an authentic Navajo antique rug, which is nicely, quite large & valuable.
