EARLY 19TH CENTURY VERSE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY JANE HOLMES AGED 10 - C. 1810

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Jane Holmes aged 10. Though undated, the style of the stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1810 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just stunning with very fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with the following verse

There is a central bunch of grapes above the first line of the verse flanked by a spray of rosebuds and a fruit basket with a bird perched on its topmost fruit, whilst each side is stitched with a rose, tree, bluebell flower and fruit basket plus birds. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central oak tree which has a snail, spray of rosebuds and a a star on either side and Jane's details to the left and right of its foliage. The edges of the linen around the verse are stitched with a blue floral border with a leaf detail in each of the upper corners, whilst the lower corners are stitched with a small star motif with a leaf and full bloom flower on each side.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, a bit grubby around the edges with a couple of very small, barely noticeable areas of damage. The linen is also darker in the verse area which appears to be the result of some bleeding to the colours of the silks used. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century bird's eye maple frame with later gilt slip. There is some veneer loss to the inner top and inner side edges of the left of the frame and smaller areas elsewhere with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.Measures 11 3/4" across x 11" (sight size) and 15 1/4" x 14 1/2" including the frame.
