Reference Number: Avaluer:59281Modified Item: No
Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
Original Description:
A true one of a kind piece of Revolutionary War history in the form of a hand carved inlaid wood stomacher with provenance. Webster’s Dictionary explains that the stomacher was an ornamental covering for the front of the upper body formerly worn by both men and woman. This exquisite relic was carved during the Revolutionary War by Bessie Braley’s great great uncle while he was an American prisoner on an actual British Man of War ship! It was presented to his sister on his return to... his home in Cape Cod. This relic comes with provenance in the form of an 1892 handwritten letter from the family describing the piece in detail and it’s origin as well as a 1953 typed index card from when this piece was loaned to an exhibition.
Boasts impeccable detail in the form of geometric patterns second to none. In Good condition with gentle wear as seen in the photos. Made 1777 etched in the reverse side (which I believe was etched at a later date by a family member).
Measures 12 1/2” x 3 1/4”. A true one of a kind piece of colonial American folk art that displays brilliantly.
We are proudly offering this piece of history through a true no reserve eBay auction. Please feel free to ask any questions prior to bidding. Thanks! On Jun-09-19 at 13:53:37 PDT, seller added the following information:Our research shows that this piece came from the Gotham family and was carved by either Nathan, Jonathan or James Goreham all whom were prisoners on the British prison ship Jersey aka Hell.  The link below will show an in depth description of Nathan’s adventurous escape.  We are currently researching Bessie Braleys genealogy to determine exactly which Goreham crafted this priceless piece of history!  On Jun-09-19 at 13:55:55 PDT, seller added the following information:Please excuse the above type Gotham=Goreham (autocorrect)
