Manufactured by Silvertone in 1938, this rare beauty features a gorgeous American Walnut cabinet, waterfall top with unique slanted front, attractive gold dial, great Art Deco appeal and terrific perfo...rmance. Cabinet: The American Walnut cabinet is a definite head turner. Gorgeous wood grain flows throughout the entire set. The waterfall top, coupled with the slanted front, certainly showcase the Art Deco designs so popular from the era. A large intricate cut grill not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. Jet black trim adds the perfect contrast and the brass Air King nameplate finishes the cabinet off with style. This seldom seen beauty is sure to be the main topic of conversation no matter which room in the home or office you choose to display it in.Dial & Knobs: The black and gold dial is quite attractive. It is illuminated nice and bright by a top mounted dial lamp allowing for easy dim or dark room tuning. All letters and numbers on the dial are legible and show little signs of wear. The center art work features an arching radio tower, globe, clouds and stars. Very unique! All three knobs are in perfect shape and control on/off & volume, band switch (between the AM broadcast band and now defunct police band) and tuning.Grill Cloth: The 1930’s stylegrill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a gold color with a 3D diamond design. This grill cloth can also bepurchased separately on our other eBay auctions. Chassis: All tubes in the 5 tube (including ballast tube) chassis were testedwith any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors werechecked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced orre-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimalperformance. Using the included copper line antenna the radio plays very well. I'm able to receive many stations across the AM broadcast band with good tone and plenty of volume.
The Cabinet’s Finish and Restoration Process: Our Radio cabinetsundergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the naturalbeauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. Weachieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sandthe cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, andblemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We makesure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detractfrom the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers areapplied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers andtoners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished inthe factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through aprofessional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room.Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allowsthe lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sandingfollows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Ozglaze rub. During the restoration process on this radio a few veneer repairs were made on the top and front of the cabinet. All have been filled and/or blended and do not detract from the beauty of the set. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, thefinal outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster&shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready toproudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. Dimensions: 14 1/2" W x 10” H x 8" D Approximate Shipping Cost: $20 East Coast, $42 Central and $55 West Coast
Antique tube radio reception can differ greatly depending on location, length of antenna, time of day and amount of interference in different areas. Many modern day appliances can also interfere with reception. This is a 75+ year old AM radio. It's reception, sound and performance should not be expected to compare to a modern radio with today's technology. Playing capability is accurately described based on my location, surroundings and hooked up to a 12’ copper line antenna. The antenna will be included with the sale but I cannot guarantee reception quality in your area. It may differ (better or worse) depending on your location, surroundings, distance from AM broadcasts in your vicinity and interference. Antique Radio Electronics, whether restored or un-restored, are by nature hazardous due to their voltage, design, age and should not be operated unattended or for great lengths at a time. Any operation, repairs or other adjustments are done at your own risk
