Mid 19th century sampler worked in wool on gauze by Cordelia Ransbery - 1847. I want to begin by mentioning there is a fair amount of stitch loss on this sampler, particularly within the outer border strawberry border and thee roof of the house, but it is still a charming piece of needlework. The field of the gauze is stitched with a triangulated long stitch framework worked in dark blue. The upper section of the frame is stitched with a fruit basket to the left and a strawberry basket... to the right, whilst the middle and lower sections contain a very sweet two storey house with a tree on either side and Cordelia's name and the date of 1847 beneath. The framework is then surrounded by a deep strawberry border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age noticeably darker on the top, bottom and left side edges. The colours of the wool are good with the stitch loss mentioned earlier. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Cordelia first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage on the lower left side edge, an area of damage to the lower right bottom edge and some fraying along the top edge which appears to have been cut at some point of time.Measures 12 1/2" x 16 3/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
