Original Description:
Mid 19th century sampler worked in wool on gauze. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845. Worked by an anonymous hand, this sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower basket which has a star above with a tulip urn, heart and lozenge motif to its left and right with a floral urn and crown beneath them. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central-i...sh floral motif with a carnation, flower and fruit tree to its left and a flower and fruit tree to the right. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a charming three storey red house to the left side and a stag and fruit tree to the right side which have a fruit basket plus bird and floral motifs above. The bottom edge of the gauze is stitched with a strip of lawn, whilst the other three edges are stitched with a meandering floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. This photograph also shows some remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze and a small piece in the lower left quadrant from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the gauze are frayed in placesMeasures 14" x 16 1/4"
