DESCRIPTION:
This auction is for a beautiful, historic, and rare, early, and desirable 1922 WORLD SERIES PROGRAM NEW YORK GIANTS vs. NEW YORK YANKEES at THE POLO GROUNDS. A seldom-seen item due to short Series length (...4 games, 1 tie).
YANKEES and BABE RUTH WERE PLAYING IN THE SECOND EVER WORLD SERIES. It featured John McGraw's New York Giants, dedicated practitioners of the dead-ball era's "inside game", and the New York Yankees, who relied on the "power game" exemplified by Babe Ruth, who was coming off of what was a “down” year statistically, with “only” 35 homers, batting .315, and slugging .672. His season was shortened by early suspension for violating a barnstorming rule then in effect. In the Series, Giants manager John McGraw instructed his pitchers to throw him nothing but curveballs, and Ruth never adjusted. Ruth had just two hits in seventeen at bats, and the Yankees lost to the Giants for the second straight year, by 4–0 (with one tie game). Sportswriter Joe Vila called him, "an exploded phenomenon". Giants' Casey Stengel also pictured.
In the 1922 World Series, the New York Giants beat the New York Yankees in five games (four games to none with one tie; starting this year the World Series was again best-of-seven).
As with the 1921 World Series, every game was played at the Polo Grounds because it housed both teams, with the home team alternating. Program is clean and lightly pencil scored for Game 4, 10/7, Giants 4-3, Hugh McQuillan went the distance over Carl Mays before 36, 242.
The game took just 1 hour, 41 minutes.
The Giants pitched around Babe Ruth and scored just enough runs to win each of the games besides the controversial Game 2 tie. No ties are possible under later rules, which allow for suspension of a tied game and resumption of it at a later date, as with Game 5 of the 2008 World Series.
This would prove to be Giants' manager John McGraw's third and final World Series win.
1922 was a significant milestone year, marking the second of 40 Yankee Pennants (with 27 Series wins).
