For Your Consideration
A VERY RARE Antique Late Victorian Brise Fan with Wooden Micro Mosaic Veneer made by Franz PODANY (1819-1892) in Vienna dated to around 1875
Description I am obsessed with Podany's fans! They speak to me for some reason. They were made by the carpenter Franz Podany (1819-1892) in Vienna between 1863-1900 (when at the factory production seized), but look surprisingly Art Deco in style. Therefore, it is n...ot surprising that this fan was used in the mid-1930s, when it gathered 4 signatures dating to 1935 and 1937. Podany applied incredibly thin micro veneer to even thinner wooden sticks in geometric designs (but also manufactured a bewildering array of other wooden items, including furniture). This fan was assembled around 1900-1910 from remaining stock in the warehouse. At this stage, one of Podany's sons had taken over the business, but it seized trading entirely in 1926. For further information, feel free to ask me for references to several published papers about Podany and his work.
I am parting with this fan very, very reluctantly, hence the reserve - a first for me, as I sell all my items without reserves, but that is how much I love this fan!
This fan is made of wooden sticks with micro veneer in different colours. The pattern is very attractive and appears almost three-dimensional. The connecting silk ribbon is a modern replacement. The 4 signatures on the reverse date to 1935 and 1937 and belong to German, or more likely, Austrian citizens, including a Dr. O. Schubert. Like most of Podany's fans, the fan is very lightweight, which made them so attractive to use.
The fan measures approx. 8.25" long and 15" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this fan in centimeters are approx. 21 cm long and ca. 38.5 cm wide.
The fan is in very good condition, with minor loss of veneer on 4-5 blades on the right side of one side of the fan - nothing distracting (see photos). I am very certain that this fan spent time in a frame at some point in its "life".
