Powerstat 21 Variac 0 - 140 VAC 4. 5 Amps But Needs Power Cord Replacement
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:51374059 | Type: Variac |
Brand: Powerstat |
Used to slowly bring up AC power when troubleshooting vintage amplifiers, radios or other such equipment. Adjustable voltage from 0 volts to 140 volts, current up to 4.5 amps. The unit is fused.
I got this from an estate auction and found the following:
The AC line cord insulation is damaged, so the line cord will need to be replaced before using. The strain relief grommet is worn and should also be replaced.
I opened up the back of th...e unit and found that the neutral wire (the white wire) from the line cord had pulled loose. There is a lot of info on the internet on how this is wired, it should go to the neutral side of the AC outlet mounted on the side of the box (there is already 1 white wire on that side of the outlet from the Powerstat). That wire is still loose because the cord needs to be replaced, although I did cover the bare wire with electrician's tape.
While replacing the power cord is straight forward, this should be done by someone who has experience in such work.
I temporarily connected the white wire to test the unit and it worked just as expected. it adjusted from 0 volts up to 140 volts as you turn the powerstat know clockwise.
A powerstat or variac is not an isolation transformer, that is a separate piece of equipment needed to isolate equipment that you are working on.
